Alt All In

Alt All In is a semi-automated mailer serving marketing and technology links Monday through Friday, on an Australian tilt. That's the pitch.

It started as an email newsletter called All In (the name via Alex Vitlin ) that we used to co-write as a quirky trend report. As usual, work got in the way, and we ended up sending around four issues. It was amazing while it lasted.

I then spent a summer holiday messing around with RSS feeds and the Twitter API and built a dashboard of sorts that amalgamated links onto a single page. Fast forward two years and Geckoboard offers this pretty much out of the box.

So what to do? I was sitting on around 250k links in the database, hoovering up around 100 a day but was unsure as how to push it out. At the same time, electronic newsletters were having something of a renaissance with titles like Rusty Foster's Today in Tabs, Next Draft and Lenny Letter via Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner leading the charge. A drop in the newsletter ocean mind you. Then I came across Paul Bennetts' Australian Startup News and everything clicked: provide a morning digest of marketing and technology links. Easy. The Alt, as in Alternative, would become the Alt version of the original All In.

I had a format but wanted a methodology so I looked at generating a count of shares across the big two: Facebook and Twitter. I then wrangled a super simple CMS that allowed me to build the newsletter from the links based on their count of shares. So yes, I am editing, which is why it is semi-automated. And yes, I do understand the scepticism around the notion of information these days, be it real or fake, but what I am culling is mainly double-ups of information as a lot of the sources end up reporting on the same things. See, the funny thing about news is, there's never enough unique stuff going around.

I've gone through two speed bump's worth of launches but everything seems to be in place now and I am fairly confident that I'll be all in from now on.
